"Hello.
You've reached the direct line of Doctor Frederick Chilton. As I am not available at the moment, you might assume I'm quite busy with something pressing. State your name and business, and I will return your call."

[And Chilton was only encouraged, knowing that he had that same pulse of logic back home.]
But in the meanwhile, no, I do not think that a direct attack is the most effective. Drawing his attention seems frantically hubristic.
[Even for Chilton.]
Take my advice and steer clear. I do not want you inflaming his attention.

Hannibal Lecter doesn't mean a damn thing here. So get him locked up. Observe him like he's on display in a zoo. Get all the revenge here and now for the things he puts you through back home in your future.

I am not certain that I can, without assistance. From Will Graham.
[Chilton was intimidated. He knew that Will had something of extraordinary status with Lecter, and he knew that he himself lacked that. Such had been made abundantly clear.
He had more to lose.]

You don't. You don't need him. Stop relying on him as a crutch to do what you should be able to do on your own. Whether it's in regards to this situation or anything really.
I believe in your maneuvering, Chilton.

[There's a hollow quiet on his end, an unnerving silence as he examines Walt's faith in him. Ironic, of course, coming from Walt of all people. As if encouraging Chilton's manipulative tendencies didn't speak to some greater qualm between them.]
I want to watch what happens first. The match has only just struck, and Hannibal will go after poor Will. My maneuvering depends on those observations.

[ Suddenly it had become a we. Suddenly, Walt had involvement in this. ]
But if something happens, if you get hurt. I make no promises that I'll hold back. You are mine.
[ Possession inherent. Emphasis on who Chilton belonged to. But after a moment, his tone turned a bit gentle. ]
Do you need company? I can stop by your office.

I'm sure I can manage, Walt. This isn't to say I don't appreciate your involvement -- I do, sincerely. [Another beat.] Remarkable. How tragedy -- or the threat of tragedy -- can bring people together.
no subject
This doesn't end as a tragedy, though. The story is going to be different this time. This time, we both accomplish the things we want -- and nothing stands in our way.
Definitely not some weird cannibal from your home world at least.

... Anyway. I am comforted by the fact.

[ And it felt like the least he was allowed to do. Sitting and waiting wasn't a strategy Walt enjoyed employing. ]
I'll send you a fruit basket or something.

[ When Walt pretty much knew the truth -- would have been the next part of that statement. ]

You better include papaya.

[ Which was perhaps a little indicative that Walt had at least answered Hannibal's cattle call for Will. ]

I think you can manage that.
